Questing Area

This level is my latest personal project - a little questing zone inspired by some vanilla & Battle for Azeroth zones in World of Warcraft! I drew heavy inspiration for layout based on a Murloc questing area in Nazjatar, but the color palette & environment were drawn from some classic Elwynn Forest areas! My initial goal was to handmake the textures, but it turned out to be a huge timesink as I’d have to learn from the ground-up all of the techniques and processes that go into handpainted textures, and I just don’t have that time at the moment.

My thought process behind the zone is a group of bandits discovered this nook in the mountains, using it as their base as the high mountain walls covered them from all sides except one entrance. In the design phase, I wanted there to play on some verticality, so I created the ramp off to the left that rose to where I imagine the bandit leader would be. Players would traverse the ramp up, fighting any bandits along the way. Halfway up the ramp would be a little side-exit that could lead to the second, smaller cliff - there, normal bandits could be found, or even a lootable treasure chest. However, the only way out of these cliff areas is to jump or go back down the ramp.

There are routes for players to go off to the right, and even around the backside of the pond in the middle of the area.

I thought I should make a little model of my own, so I quickly modeled & sculpted a little shack - I imagine it could be used for fishing or hunting, or just observation. Thought it would be a neat little object to put in!
